WOMEN EMPOWERMENT

The empowerment and liberation of women, and therefore the improvement of their political, social, economic and health status is very important for a society to thrive. There are many parts of the world where even today, women struggle to be treated as equals while facing threats to their lives, health and well-being. As a result, women are continually being deprived of power and influence that otherwise, could help them fight gender inequality more effectively. This is in addition to the fact that in most countries women receive less formal education compared to their male counterparts, and at the same time, their knowledge, talent and skills often go unrecognised.

Clause 6 from the ‘Millennium Declaration, 2000’ states, “No individual and no nation must be denied the opportunity to benefit from development. The equal rights and opportunities of women and men must be assured.” Multiple studies have shown that if women are fully empowered and engaged across all social levels, the entire society benefits.

The current gender inequality statistics are alarming for both India (national average) and J&K at state/UT level with India ranking in the bottom 20% of the ranked countries when it comes to gender inequality (GII: HDR UNDP). Despite recent women empowerment initiatives introduced by the government, women continue to face discrimination and violence throughout their lives. Females are more likely to be the victims when it comes to infanticide, sexual abuse, domestic violence, trafficking, acid-attacks and discrimination compared to males. A lot more needs to be done to alleviate the status of women so that this cycle of discrimination and marginalisation comes to an end.

Our Road Map

At Humanix, we understand the ground-realities and the difficulties encountered by women across all walks of life. We believe in empowering women through imparting education, knowledge and furnishing them with skills that will ensure they become self-reliable and independent. Our programs have been developed to improve women’s ability to earn income beyond traditional occupations, achieve economic self-reliance and ensure women’s equal access to the labour market.

We also believe in improving people’s lives through education and awareness, especially when it comes to ending the cycle of discrimination and violence faced by women in our societies. Our volunteers are at the forefront when it comes to spreading awareness and providing support and guidance to these women facing difficulties. Furthermore, alongside our ‘healthcare’ team, we intend to supply unprivileged women with sanitation kits and educate them regarding healthy-living.
